Dissolving (in)effective partnerships
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies the problem of partnership dissolution in the context of asymmetric information. Past work has shown that ownership share endowments, interdependence of partners’ valuations, and asymmetric control all affect the possibility of efficient dissolution. In this paper, I argue that the effectiveness of the existing partnership in generating value, which has not been studied, is of first-order importance for efficient implementation. I show, in a novel class of “cooperative” partnerships characterized by ex ante interdependence of valuations, that effectiveness is significantly more important than share endowments. Intuitively, as the effectiveness of cooperation between partners (and thus partnership value) increases, the gains from dissolving decrease but the informational rents remain constant, so efficient dissolution is unambiguously more difficult to achieve. For sufficiently high effectiveness, efficient dissolution is Pareto-improving but is impossible for any pattern of share endowments. For sufficiently low effectiveness, however, efficient dissolution is possible for all patterns of shares. The existence of efficient implementation depends on share endowments only for moderately effective partnerships. This helps to explain the persistence of equalshares partnerships and the prevalence of “Texas Shootout” dissolution mechanisms in practice. JEL Codes: C72, D82, L14

Pledges of Commitment and Cooperation in Partnerships
We use experimental methods to investigate whether pledges of commitment can improve cooperation in endogenously-formed partnerships facing a social dilemma. Treatments vary in terms of the individual’s: (1) opportunity to commit to their partner; (2) the cost of dissolving committed partnerships; and (3) the distribution of these dissolution costs between partners. Our findings show that pledg...
متن کاملBeyond “Two Cultures”: Guidance for Establishing Effective Researcher/Health System Partnerships
Background The current literature proposing criteria and guidelines for collaborative health system research often fails to differentiate between: (a) various types of partnerships, (b) collaborations formed for the specific purpose of developing a research proposal and those based on long-standing relationships, (c) researcher vs. decision-maker initiatives, and (d) the underlying drivers for ...
متن کاملDissolving Multi-Partnerships Efficiently∗
I study a market where agents with unit demand jointly own heterogeneous goods. In this market, the existence of an efficient, incentive compatible, individually rational, and budget balanced mechanism depends on the shares of the agents. I characterize the set of shares for which having such a mechanism is possible. This set includes the symmetric allocation and excludes the allocation in whic...
متن کاملAll Health Partnerships, Great and Small: Comparing Mandated With Emergent Health Partnerships; Comment on “Evaluating Global Health Partnerships: A Case Study of a Gavi HPV Vaccine Application Process in Uganda”
The plurality of healthcare providers and funders in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has given rise to an era in which health partnerships are becoming the norm in international development. Whether mandated or emergent, three common drivers are essential for ensuring successful health partnerships: trust; a diverse and inclusive network; and a clear governance structure. Mandated and ...
متن کاملEvaluating Global Health Partnerships: A Case Study of a Gavi HPV Vaccine Application Process in Uganda
Background Global health partnerships have grown rapidly in number and scope, yet there has been less emphasis on their evaluation. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is one such public-private partnership; in Gavi-eligible countries partnerships are dynamic networks of immunization actors who work together to support all stages and aspects of Gavi support. This paper describes a conceptual framework ...
